Watching the Dunes Form

by

Watching the Dunes FormSometimes the little thingsCan be amazing. The ocean, the breeze,The sand beneath bare feet. Each grain was onceA piece of something bigger,Now just a hypnotic display of time.A desert waterfallThat only extracts memoriesOut from the cracks.Sometimes there’s crazy. The little things in lifeAdd up,Subtract sanity,Equals two cylinder blocksStanding on the edge of a bridge.Sometimes the darknessKeeps the flame lit.The flame isn’t for seeing,Or believing. The flame is for burning down dreamsSoot used as war paintTo fend off existence.Sometimes happiness only comesFrom dreaming. There’s something aboutThe amber waves,Not of grain,But of the current that over took it.Mesmerizing.Sometimes it’s the nightmaresThat verify our breathing,Validate our beauty,The real and abstract,Both of which are unfair. The ugly is worth saving,Trapped inside an impossible bottle,A shipwreckBuried under the sand.I turn the hourglass over.
