The Beavers, They're Taking Over!
by Sally Mills
I know this, because I am one of them.I live in my studio shoebox of sticks next to anotherMs. Beaver in a matching studio shoebox of sticks. She goes off her meds sometimesand rages in the night, screams off the balcony at no onein particular: FUCK! She does not speakfor both of us. People love beavers becausewe are furry and cute with ourlittle buck teeth, but we willtake over if you let us. Spreadlike friggin’ lupine: let one of us in,and there goes the field! Or ticks. We destroy. My studio shoebox of sticksnearly took out the peninsulahigh school one year, the hospital another. Itturned the neighboring streaminto a lake, causing even my own familyto flee and take shelter somewherefar away from me.Now, when people see mecoming, I can see itin their faces: She’s cutefor a while, but don’tlet her get too comfortable unlessyou want a flooded basement.
Fuck.
