Pilgrimage

by

We set off before first lightthe pre-dawn drive straining the eye.Assaulted by pulsing headlights, my sighttried to race ahead, to preview the majestyof the village beneath the hill,a return to a bygone agewhere we imagined all yet still. It was a pilgrimageeven if we struggled in the carand traveling wasted too much of the day.'That’s just the way things are'you said. We were about halfwaystopping for lunch at noonalready resigned to return far too soon.
