Letter to a Cosmic Santa
Dear Santa of the Cosmos,We yearn for so muchHere on earth on the darkest daysOur lists grow longerAs the days grow shorterAnd we chop down treesTo bring the fragranceOf the woods into our houses
Some of us want peaceSome of us just want moneySome of us want pills to relieve painSome of us want a new presidentSome of us want a new countrySome of us want a fresh startSome of us wish you could bringBack our loved ones who are gone
Maybe it’s asking too much, SantaAs we tend to be greedy or needyThis time of year, but who elseCan we turn to when so muchSeems to have gone wrongWhen nothing short of a miracleCould put things right, could touchHearts frozen or turned to stone
Some of us would welcome youAs we would welcome any strangerWho comes bearing giftsSome of us would shoot you downFrom the sky as an intruderAnd turn you into a trophySome of us would make you a saintSome of us would call you a devil
The truth is that we are most openNow when we are longing mostFor gifts that are beyond our graspAnd feeling our losses the hardestWhen we are supposed to beFull of good cheer and emptyOf ill will and yet we are sadAnd so we await your arrival
