Come through the Sycamores

by

Let us go, let us goOn the ends of greco lanesTemples and statues of suburban pillarsThe quick moving cherubs of April thrillersWhere the glassy men fall fast atop lilacsPast urbane retreats and ladies in pinkSome violet and autumn, garrulous greensMuttering their excitement into the windShedding their feathers into the windWinding down avenue Maryland

And the wind blows us back Let the wind blow us backThe soft purple sway of the newly birthed lilacTo the hum of hyacinths, the sway of hyacinthsMocking the lane of yellow fire hydrantsTo let us go sure on Jesuit wingsThrough crocodilian myrtlesAnd magnolian rainCondensing in droplets across of a paneThe unpainted lattice of clear window panesHiding our sadness in hyaline shade

And the days were bright, the days were brightI will walk out of the door and into the lightTo see a flaxen tangle so sure of itselfSure that it’s happy with somebody elseAnd I will walk out into the laneOn cloud ridden eveningsTepid daysTo prance through iridescent rainAnd hope to catch a bowTo dream to catch a bowTo string it on our backs and fire an arrow

And I will say, I will sayThat alchemy does not interest meI do not exchange stars for astrologyI do not rank colors where colors exchangeTo wind up and down the avenue lanesAnd watch the hyacinths bloom in MarchI do not watchAs pods bloom to petalsAs thorns grow to rosesI do not watch as ruins embezzleWith the star dust of Ra and glistening metal

And I do not watch, I do not pay mind to repriseBecause after will always be fast on the riseA mark for when Daphne’s descend into timeWhen hyacinths rise up a petal and mark it with airFor the bosoms of petals to slick back their hairAnd say “This is all for now”“For better, for autumns arisal is now”Is it better to laugh or to scowl? For the thorns that grew blossoms to now make amendsTo lasso the moon with a chain and pull it closerTo revolve to a roof on top of the roverAnd will there be more?Another stonehenge of mayans?A pillar of rock for the high sun to shine in?And will it say?“There will be another spring, another day”“It will always, always be this way.”

And have we enough fuel in the tankTo spread our rubber wings down towards the seaTo claim on our lives that after all, we our freeFor just a dayJust for a momentTo claim that we are each others good omensTo claim that we were cut by the blade grassTo claim that we were pampered by pelicansAnd is it all that we were for?To fix the door and break it too?To jiggle the key and say it won’t work for youThe key won’t work on youTo say adieuAlthough we were never giften with mechanicsOr other languagesBut only chartreuse and pagesAnd do we pay taxes or mindTo all of the living that we’ve left behind? And how do we decide?

But I am no foolI am not one to pick up his hat after he’s fallenToo dust off his denim and walk along the streetPast the mounds of dark forest and retreatTo walk a stream and rememberA stream that gargles softlyWith brisk granite water as its offeringAnd I am no foolTo put on his coat of woolAnd walk into the winters pastAnd say “I am warm”“I am in no need of fire, I am warm”For I admit I am cold in a stormMy wool is no match to windI am no sheepI am not without a shepherdAnd have you heard? That hard splintered heads utter soft spoken wordsAnd have you seen? The night sky tells stories to brothers in requiemAnd I am no fool, I am no foolI will not be one who sits at a cafe table to droolTo talk nonsenseTo talk meaningless topicsI am purebred vanity with endless pockets

But I am no foolI will not droolI will not sit around a table with friends and toolTool aroundPlant seeds in the ground and watch them grow slowlyTo wait for the season of harvestI do not wait for larvae to shed their cocoonsI am no breeder, I have no need to groomI will sit atop the sky in a hot air balloonAnd proclaim to the heavens in leaping croons“And I am no fool, I am no fool”“I have no patience to sit around a tool”

But there are chrysanthemums in sunlightAnd orchards full of tangerinesAnd orchards growing dreams that rise green like the harvest moonAnd I am no fool, I am no foolI will sit and watch the moon as it rulesOver night, over nightI will sit and watch the moon as it shines alightAnd I will sit and draw the moonAnd I will sit and watch the moonAnd will sit and wait for the chrysanthemums to bloom
